Do you need Horse Trailer Insurance? Almost all auto insurance policies provide trailer towing liability coverage. However, there are situations where additional insurance is wise. Fire, vandalism, theft, and acts of god are most likely not covered. Sometimes these things are covered under your homeowner’s policy if you store your trailer at your house. So check out your policy for details.
You may want to purchase additional insurance for your trailer because of the following:
Do you haul expensive items? I’m sure prize winning Horses are very valuable!
Is your trailer very expensive? Most Custom Horse Trailers are well over 50,000 dollars!
Have you upgraded and added expensive items? We all do and it adds up fast!
It is doubtful that your auto or homeowner’s policy will cover a loss of these items.
Where to Purchase?
Typically separate Horse trailer insurance as well as most any trailer insurance can be purchased from companies specializing in RV insurance and most auto insurance companies as well. There aren’t really any companies out there that specialize in just Horse Trailer insurance. Typical coverage can include the following and as with all insurance it pays to shop around.
General Liability: Most all auto insurance coverage also will cover general liability on the trailer.
Roadside Assistance: Some policies may include this and it can be a real life saver if you are ever broke down on the road. Roadside Assistance usually covers towing, which is a big expense if you tow a large trailer.
Contents: This will cover basically anything you may haul. So be sure and take the time to add up all your gear. The total cost may surprise you! Some insurance companies may require proof of value on larger items.
Accidents (Non-Towing): This usually includes theft, acts of god, fire, and vandalism. Typical auto and home insurance will not cover these incidents.
Personal Items: May or may not fall under Contents. Be sure and ask your insurance agent.
Loan Balance Coverage: Can be included in more expensive trailer or RV policies. Only comes into play if during a total loss the actual cash value isn’t enough to pay off the remaining loan amount.
Full Time RVer’s Coverage: This type of policy is similar to a homeowner’s policy and is a good idea if you live in your RV.
Total Loss Coverage: Some people think that in a total loss they will get a new unit. That usually isn’t the case, unless you have added this type of coverage.
