Driving a sports car is the ultimate dream for many people. Observing them up close is the nearest some will ever get. Fewer will ever get to sit behind the wheel, put their foot on the throttle and feel the torque rippling through their bodies. The majority will see them in various outlets such as the TV or online. As the New Year draws closer, here is a look at the top 3 sports cars we can expect to see in 2014.
1] 2014 Corvette C7: It comes with upgrades to the structure, tyres, visual displays, technology, suspension, active handling stability control and performance traction management which make experienced drivers improve their track times.
* The body structure’s 57% stiffer and constructed out of a new aluminium frame; its 99 pounds lighter.
* The hood and roof are standard carbon fiber to take weight off the front and high panels to drive down the centre of gravity.
* The breakthrough’s in the engine which has direct injection, cylinder deactivation and variable valve timing; those three do a lot independently to improve power, torque and efficiency, but together they work synergistically.
* It has a high output, very low mass and is a huge enabler for the sports car which has 450hp and 450 pound-feet going through its back wheels that allow it to reach 60 mph in 3.8 seconds.
* The C7 has five drive modes ranging from the most aggressive to the most conservative, plus its body features race proven aerodynamics.
* The 6.2 litre, aluminium V8 fires smoothly and the interior and exterior look totally different but the Stingray is still recognizable.
2] 2014 Jaguar F Type: The clamp type hood of the car harbours a 3.0 litre, V6 engine generating 340 to 380hp depending on the model.
* The V8 versions packs an outstanding 495 hp.
* The F type reaches from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1s; the F Type S – 4.8s and the V8 in 4.2s.
* It comes with a 7-speed automatic transmission to make it easier to change gears; it’s accompanied by steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and a manual gear-mode selector.
* The car interior is quite modern; there’s no chrome in the cockpit; the old style traits of the Jaguar are gone.
* The telematics look a bit dated but the central stack make it look more modern. When the car is started, two centre vents rise out of the dash and look like they came out of a fighter jet.
* The dynamics programme allows the driver to adjust the engine response, steering, transmission and the likes.
* It’s lightweight, compact and 20mm lower to allow the driver to connect to the car.
3] 2014 Porsche Cayman: It has undergone a huge transformation since it won Best Drivers Car of the Year award four years ago.
* The redesigned Cayman’s lighter, better looking and more powerful, providing 325 hp and 272 pound-feet of torque coupled with an already proven engine formula.
* It comes with adaptive suspension and brake-based vectoring which makes it easier to handle high speed corners.
* The Cayman has a 2.7 litre flat-six cylinder engine and a larger 3.6 litre engine on the S type.
* The 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic gearbox is optional; there’s a six-speed manual transmission depending on the driver’s preferences.
All three cars will get heads turning; not a lot of people can ignore the beautiful sounds that come from those powerful cars.
